Gardens & Screen House

Our ultimate goal is to grow our own food organically and sustainably. We've been working the soil, composting, and building up the gardens in preparation for the rainy season when the plants will thrive.

Gardens getting set up above the Tempate. Cucumbers are doing great. So are the radishes.

We've planted bunches of pineapple and are expecting our first harvest within a couple of months.

The jatropha are doing great. They've grown a few feet in the last year. We recently acquired about 500 new seeds and almost all of them have sprouted and are looking beautiful. They'll go into the ground in February or March.

The original spot we chose for our gardens didn't turn out too well. There was too much shade, the soil lacked for nutrients and not for clay, and the fragile seedlings were unprotected from the rain. We built a greenhouse close to the main lodge that we have more control over. We roofed it with clear plastic and wrapped it in screen to protect the plants. We are also putting a lot of care into building the soil.

In the meantime we've planted a few crops down below the Jatropha. We have green beans, cucumber, tomato, yuca, peanuts, and more and they are doing very well.

The pineapples are growing well and we have eaten a few this month, they are tasty! We'll be getting many more in the months to come.
